The Chandragiri Fort of Tirupati is one of the most beautiful yet unexplored places in India. The Great Fort of Vijaynagara Empire still stands strong and shows the legacy of this Great Empire. The Palace reminds us of those who ruled over the sacred land of Tirupati and also how the peaceful land was destroyed by the outsiders.
The Fort itself is a charming beauty that is visited by thousands of people. As the Chandragiri Fort is very near the temple so people generally see it as a combined tour opportunity. But the real beauty of Fort lies in its architecture.
History of Chandragiri Fort
Chandragiri Fort was built by Yadava Rayas in the 11th century. The great kingdom of this King ruled for more than 3 centuries. His fort then came under the Vijayanagara rulers. It was due to as the Golconda Sultans attacked the original capital of Vijaynagra rulers the city of Penukonda. The days of the Vijayanagara empire were soon gone too.
While at the height of the Empire it was flourishing and spread from Raichur in Karnataka to Kanyakumari. While the empire flourished until it shrunk very considerably.
The Battle of Talikota is what collapsed the Vijayanagar empire. The great empire was defeated very badly by the Deccan Sultanate. They were invaded, badly thrashed, and defeated. The great Fort too was then lost by the kings. It was annexed by the Deccan Sultanate.
Architecture and Exploring Around the Fort
The Chandragiri Fort is one of the beautiful forts and you will be amazed by its architecture. The fort has 2 gateways which are 1 km apart. There are beautifully carved pillars on each side of the gateways. The main Palace remains the Raja Mahal which means Kings Palace. The Raja Mahal is one of the most beautiful looking palaces and shows how well the artisans and craftsmen were.
While originally there are 2 forts in the area. The upper and lower fort. The Queen’s fort or the Rani Mahal is the second one. Raja Mahal is now a museum where you would find different artifacts that were found in the surrounding area. The museum also holds models of the fort, the main temple and other temples which were in the region.
The Rani Mahal which was earlier the office of the commandment of the fort is also pretty spectacular. While it is a smaller version of the original fort but still it is one of the most beautifully crafted forts.
The Palace was constructed using stones, bricks, lime devoid of timber, and Mortar. IT is pretty spectacular to see that such a beautiful palace is still standing strong for around 1000 years. There are 8 temples, Raja Mahal, Rani Mahal, and other ruined parts in the area.

While the fort has much history and architecture, it is not very well documented by ASI. Also not it well maintained as it gets international recognition. The fort is maintained by some district level officials only.

Chandragiri Fort is Visited throughout the year; however, the best time to visit Chandragiri Fort is from September to February when the climate is relatively balmy with intermittent showers. The weather is nice and pretty and great for travel.
In Summers from March to June the weather is hot and humid. The maximum temperature can go up to 42°C to 45 °C particularly in the months of April and May. You could easily imagine how unbearable this would be. As a lot of visitors avoid traveling at this time of the year, it is relatively less crowded.
In monsoon from July to October, the temperature starts lowering which makes it more pleasant. Tirupati experiences mild showers and it is a very good time to make your trip. While if you visit in Monsoon and especially in September is the time for one of the biggest festivities in Andhra Pradesh, and especially in Tirupati the Brahmotsavam.
In winters from November to February, the weather is pleasant and ideal for tours. While the Minimum temperature does not usually dip below 15°C. The temperature at this time is very comfortable. Instead, you would surely need some woolen clothes at night to keep yourself warm.

How to reach Tirupati by Air
Tirupati has its own airport. The airport is nestled in the region of Renigunta. The airport is only 15 km from the main city. Frequent flights are available from many major cities in India. You could easily get a flight from Indian metropolia such as Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore to this place. While if you are looking for an International option. Then the adjacent International airport is Chennai. The Chennai airport which the place has good connectivity with different corners of the country and abroad.
How to reach Tirupati by Rail
Tirupati is also well connected by rail also. The main railhead of the place is Tirupati Railway Station. The railway station is linked with railway stations like Bangalore, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Madurai, and Mumbai. You could easily get a taxi a bus to reach the fort.
How to reach Tirupati by Road
Don’t need to worry about it prominent transport agencies of the region are APSRTC and KSRTC buses which link every part of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka with Tirupati in that order. While the distance from Major cities like Banglore is 253 km, from Chennai is 158 km, Hyderabad is 558 km only.
While if you reach the Bus station take An autorickshaw ride from Bus Station to Chandragiri Fort. The auto rickshaw will take approximately around Rs. 400 round trip. Also, you would be happy to know that the auto may wait for about 2 hours, which I think is enough to see the place.
