The Trekker’s heaven Himalays never dissappoint us with number of treks it gives us. From Kedarkantha in Uttarakhand to Indrahar Pass in Himachal the exciting treks never ends here in the Northern India. While all treks has some value but few treks are there which also has a emotional value.
The Trek which has always been seeked by trekkers all around the world. The Trek which not only shows you one of the best views but also is spritually benifitting. One of the toughest yet fun Tungnath Temple Trek.
Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is one of the temples from Panch Kedar temples. Tungnath is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The trek is famous for the serenity around the temple is what we all miss in our daily life. You feel connected there. Secondly, Tugnath trek is one of the most famous treks of Uttarakhand. Tungnath is at a height of 3680 m is believed to be 1000 years old.
The temple has a great value not only for the people around here but for all Shiv Bhakts around the world. The famous Panch kedar Story is known to all us Pahadi’s which our grandmother told us. The temple was built by the Pandavas to seek his pardon and blessing.
The Story Behind Tungnath Temple
As you already know Pandavas won the Kurkshetra war but also they killed thousands of their cousins. They commited a sin and for which they felt guilty. The only way they could be pardoned was by only one Lord Shiva.
Then Sage Vyas Rishi advised Pandavas to search him and seek his pardon and blessings. Lord Shiva went into hiding and kept avoiding Pandavas. God took the form of bull and went underground somewhere around Guptkashi where Pandavas came eventually. But God is one step ahead of them and his bull’s body rematerialized into 5 different locations which represents today’s Panch Kedar. The Temple is the place where his hands or bahu were seen.

Tungnath temple trek is a blessing for those who seek beautiful weather and himalayan peaks all around without being and expert in trekking. Tungnath trek is a 3.5 km trek which begins from chopta.
Itinerary For the Trek
The trek starts from Chopta which is the starting point of the trek. The distance from Chopta to the Tungnath temple is around 3 km . From here,the summit of Chandrashila peak is located at a distance of around 1 km.
Day 1 Reach Dehradun
Try to reach Dehradun early in the morning as your exciting journey starts from this beautiful city only. As you know that Tungnath is in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand so a Bus will be the best option from here if you are on a budget.
One can get a direct bus from ISBT Dehradun for Ukhimat or Gopeshwar which are two other big towns near this beautiful hill station Chopta. We reached Duggalbitha near Chopta which itself is one of the most beautiful hill station here in Uttarakhand. At an altitude of around 2860 m Chopta is a small yet beautiful place where you can get most of your items for this exciting trek.
Day 2 Dugglabitha to Chopta
If you have your own car or bike one can drive from Dugglabitha to like Chopta which is one of the last villages before you reach the Lord of Peaks. Car and bikes parked here are your own responsibility though.
Chopta to Tungnath is a beautiful journey. The bugyals of Uttarakhand will never dissappoint you. Just imagine Lush green endless grasslands. The grass so soft that you can slide over it. One has to be their to feel this. Dugglabitha to Chopta is small trek which lasts only a couple of hours.
There are many trekking routes in this route itself so keep asking to locals about the route or just hire one here in Chopta or even in Dugglabitha. The panoramic hills and himalayan views all around makes this tough journey extrmely soothing.
Day 3 Chopta to Tungnath and back
One can see the beautiful Himalayan peaks from Chopta. Chopta to Tungnath is a real tough trail and should be done under some guidance if possible. If you are taking this trek in winter months then you can expect foot deep Snow here. The Uphill tough trek is what tests you before you reach the Lord himself.
As you move uphill the trek gets a little steep, but soon you will see the beautiful Tungnath temple and the Chandrashila Peak. The view from up is what heaven must be like.
Just soak in the beautiful view, see the most beautiful sunset and click some photos(ofcourse). You can finally trek down to Chopta after this.

HOW TO REACH TUNGNATH
The nearest railway station to reach Tungnath is Haridwar railway station. One can get trains all day long from Delhi to reach Haridwar. From Haridwar you can take buses for Ukhimath or Gopeshwar.
The nearest airport is Jolly grant airport which is in Dehradun. Dehradun airport is fairly connected with Delhi airport and from there you can go to ISBT Dehradun to catch your bus for Ukhimath or Gopeshwar.
You can reach Haridwar via Kashmere Gate ISBT New Delhi. After you reach haridwar you can book a taxi for chopta which is 189 km from haridwar and is 8 hrs long ride.
Other than hiring taxi you can take bus upto ukhimath. Ukhimath is town which is before guptakashi. From ukhimath you can hire taxi which can range from rs.150 to rs.500 depending on season.

GENERAL WEATHER AND FOOD
The most beautiful thing about the trek is you get to see the Pure himalayan ranges and get to feel the chilly winds of Himalayas. In day you can expect weather from 6°c to 15°c while at night you can expect chilling weather ranging between -4°c to 3°c.
While you are onbaord this trip why don’t you try out some local pahari food near Ukhimath, Gopeshwar or chopta. Pahari foods are generally healthy and energizing in nature.

The small beautiful and enchanting hill station near Tungnath is surely for those who want a small offbeat hill station. From trekking, tours to camping this hill station has go you covered. And you know what’s even more interesting that it is not that expensive here.
Just imagine waking up in the lush green valleys filled with white clouds all over, It is surreal is in it.
Do not miss the High altitude mountains of Deoria Tal here. One of the most beautiful camping bases here in the region Deoria Tal has what you need. Situated near the Ukhimath Chopta road Deoria lake is at an altitidue of around 2387 m and is surrounded by the beautiful Chaukhamba range.
The lake is small yet beautiful tal, surrounded by trees all around. The camping experience here is awesome and the snow capped mountains witnessed from here make this experience even more beautiful.
BEST TIME FOR TUNGNATH TREK
Tungnath temple trek is opened all year, but I will recommend you should commence your trek in summer season as there will be less harsh conditions and you will be able to complete your trek easily. But for a snow lover best time would be winters when you can experience mesmerizing snow all around.
ACTIVITIES AND STAY
Two main activities are trekking and camping and while for stay there are good number of hotels in chopta .It is advisable to pre-book your hotel as sometime in peak season it is hard to find good hotel.
